Brecon High School project contractors appointed

(News release Powys County Council:) 15 May 2017 - Plans for the replacement of Brecon High School have taken a major step forward with the appointment of BAM Construct UK Ltd as project contractors. 

BAM have extensive experience in the design and construction of a range of public buildings in Wales and across the United Kingdom, bringing together the demands of function with aesthetic appeal.

The company have been appointed to lead the £22 million project following a rigorous tender process. The project will see the existing secondary school replaced with new school buildings fit to meet the demands of education in the 21st century

The Outline Business Case for the construction of the new 11-18 school in Brecon, to replace the current School buildings was approved last autumn as part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Education Programme.

Acting Head of Schools at Powys County Council, Gareth Jones said:

‘We have reached a significant stage in this important project for secondary school provision in South Powys. Appointing a contractor means we will be able progress design and build plans and we look forward to working closely with the school and the community.’

David Meredith, Chair of Governors at Brecon High School, said:

‘We are very pleased that the tender process has concluded with the successful appointment of an experienced contractor for what is a major project for the school and the next step in the schools journey of success following the examination success last summer and the school being removed from Special Measures.’

The County Council have recognised the need to improve the secondary school infrastructure for some time and the replacement school is a key part plans to ensure pupils in the Brecon community are taught in buildings that are fit for purpose.
