BAM wins joint venture contract for government buildings in Berlin

Bunnik, the Netherlands, 5 July 2017 - BAM Deutschland, the German building company of Royal BAM Group nv, has been awarded (in joint venture with Hochtief) the contract for the refurbishment of two listed government buildings in central Berlin. The client is the German Building Agency (Bundesanstalt für Immobilienaufgaben, BImA). The future user of the buildings is the German Ministry of Health (Bundesministerium für Gesundheit, BMG). After completion of the construction works by the end of 2020, the joint venture will also be responsible for operation and maintenance of the Ministry building for a period of 25 years.

The scheme is a PPP-funded project called 'Mauerstraße Berlin-Mitte'. It comprises two historical, currently vacant buildings in an iconic setting. The so-called Haus 1 on Mauerstraße 29 has a gross floor area of 38,000 m2. After the refurbishment, the Ministry of Health will bring together its entire staff here, now spread over several offices in Berlin. Haus 1 will include offices, a visitor and press centre, as well as meeting rooms and a cafeteria.

Haus 2, located at Mauerstraße 27, has a gross floor area of approximately 30,000 m2 and will also be used by the Ministry of Health. Both properties were used as headquarters of the Deutsche Bank until 1945. In the post-war years, they were used by the former Interior Ministry of the GDR until 1989. Since 1990, the buildings accommodated employees of the German Parliament (Deutsche Bundestag) and various government departments. The former counter hall will be converted into a conference centre.

BAM Deutschland and Hochtief will work together with the renowned architectural firm KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten (Braunschweig). Arup is responsible for the planning of the technical equipment.
