The Efteling theme park without traffic jams
The Efteling theme park aims to increase its visitor numbers from 5 to 7 million annually. This will put a great deal of pressure on the Europalaan access road. The capacity of this road needed to increase from 1200 to 3000 vehicles per hour. How could the theme park achieve this while ensuring that there was no deterioration in liveability for people resident in the surrounding area?
BAM designed dynamic tidal flow lanes leading to the entrance to the Efteling. In the mornings, three lanes are for traffic going to the park, and one for traffic moving away from it. Halfway through the day, two lanes go to the park, and two lead away from it. And at the end of the day, three lanes take traffic out of Kaatsheuvel, in the direction of the N261 road between Waalwijk and Tilburg. The various options can be selected from a web-based platform with a simple user interface. This makes it easy for Efteling staff to adjust the lane directions themselves. The result? A smooth flow of traffic, 80% fewer traffic jams and a reduction in exhaust emissions.
