Royal BAM Group reports that the one-third interest in the dredging company Ballast Ham Dredging (BHD) has been acquired from Ballast Nedam nv.

Bunnik, the Netherlands, 20 November 2002 – FCI Constructors (a subsidiary of HBG Constructors, Inc., part of Royal BAM Group) was awarded two contracts in the state of California, USA, with a combined value of approximately $45 million.

Royal BAM NBM has completed the acquisition of HBG's share capital from Grupo Dragados, bringing Royal BAM Group into existence. Royal BAM Group occupies a strong position in the West-European construction industry, with an order book worth €10.8 billion as at 30 June 2002.

The project in Boston involving the jacking of three tunnel boxes beneath a railway embankment without interrupting the trains – an achievement which HBG group companies Interbeton and Nuttall had a major hand in – has won the British Construction Industry Award [BCIA] for International Projects.

20 years of planning and preparation and a referendum among the Swiss population preceded the project: the construction of a new rail link between Bern and Zurich. Today, however, the implementation of all the associated sub-projects is in full swing. The most spectacular part is the Onzberg passage, where Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau is involved in the excavation work.

The inflatable barrage near Ramspol [Central Netherlands] has been completed. After a series of tests, HBG Civiel recently handed over the barrage, which comprises three inflatable sections. The barrage is intended to protect the hinterland from the waters of the IJsselmeer, which tend to pile up in the Ketelmeer, especially with northwesterly gales.

The Castor, by far the heaviest cutter suction dredger in the BHD fleet, shudders as it gets to work off the coast of Mesaieed Port. Despite those hard layers, Ballast Ham Dredging is making good progress with dredging seven million cubic metres of material and discharging it in land reclamation areas.

Even the tiling contractors have nearly finished work on Ireland's National Aquatic Centre. Rohcon, part of HBG Ascon, is building the swimming pool complex on the outskirts of Dublin under a DBFO contract –design, build, finance and operate.

The builders of the New Carquinez Bridge in California have completed another phase of the project: the spinning of the cables. The New Carquinez Bridge is being built by a consortium of HBG Constructors, Interbeton and Cleveland Bridge, but the construction of this fixed link over 1,000 metres long is in fact a global operation.

Bunnik, the Netherlands - The Executive Boards of Koninklijke BAM NBM nv [Royal BAM NBM] and Hollandsche Beton Groep nv [HBG] announce that the Netherlands Competition Authority [NMa] has determined that no licence is required for Royal BAM NBM’s acquisition of HBG’s construction activities in the Netherlands.

Schiedam, The Netherlands – Oil company Clyde Petroleum Exploratie bv, based in The Hague, has awarded HBG Steel Structures a contract to construct an offshore gas production platform. The contract value is €15 million.

Rijswijk, the Netherlands – HBG, Hollandsche Beton Groep nv, is to acquire the one-third interest of Ballast Nedam nv in the jointly owned dredging company Ballast Ham Dredging following Ballast Nedam’s intention to exercise its put option.

On 3 September 2002, the European Commission formally decided to declare the consolidation in the industry resulting from the acquisition of HBG's activities outside the Netherlands compatible with the EU's common market.

At the end of this month, Palmetto Bridge Constructors will start pouring the concrete base for the first pier of the Cooper River Bridge in Charleston, South Carolina. Construction of the pier will commence immediately after that.

Wayss & Freytag Schlüsselfertigbau is currently working on the renovation of more than a thousand flats in Nuremberg. The majority of these homes, in the St. Johannis District, were built between 1926 and 1932.

HBG Utiliteitsbouw and Ballast Nedam Bouw have started work at Schiphol Airport on the extension of the South Lounge – departures and arrivals concourse – as well as the construction of a baggage basement. This is the first part of a major order worth around €40 million.
