BAM awarded contract to build Collection Building Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

BAM verwerft opdracht Collectiegebouw Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

Bunnik, the Netherlands, 26 January 2017 – The Municipality of Rotterdam (on behalf of Stichting Collectiegebouw) has awarded BAM Bouw en Techniek the contract for the construction of the Collection Building for Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. The mirror-clad building designed by architectural firm MVRDV will house a public art depot. The contract value is approximately €43 million. BAM will start construction at the beginning of March. Completion is expected in 2019.

The Collection Building will form the spectacular entrance to the Museum Park in Rotterdam. The art depot will be over 39 metres high and will have a floor area of 15,000 square metres. The Collection Building is an art depot which will be open to the public and at the same time provide a place for the collections of private collectors. The depot will first and foremost provide a lasting solution for the flooding which Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has been struggling with in recent years.

In addition, the Collection Building will provide a way to give art back to the people of Rotterdam. The museum can currently only exhibit eight per cent of the collection due to limited space. Soon it will be able to exhibit many times that amount. The transparency of the building and the arrangement of the works will enable visitors to watch restorations and research. Given the atmosphere of the building, the catering facilities and roof terrace 35 metres up, and the surrounding greenery, this first public art depot will become a national and international public attraction.
