BAM starts Monsin dam refurbishment (Liège, Belgium)

BAM renoveert stuwdam in de Maas

Bunnik, the Netherlands, 15 October 2018 - Galère, the Belgian operating company of BAM active in Wallonia and Brussels, has won a contract in joint venture with Jan De Nul for the first phase of the refurbishment of the Monsin dam in the Meuse. The client is the Walloon government (Service public de Wallonie). The contract value is almost €20 million, half of which for BAM.

The Pont Barrage de Monsin is a dam with a traffic bridge over the Meuse in Liège near Jupille-sur-Meuse. The complex was designed by architect Joseph Moutschen and was opened on the occasion of the World Exhibition of 1930. The bridge connects the right bank of the Meuse with the island of Monsin, located between the Meuse and the Albert Canal. The weir is also used as a hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 18 MWe.

The joint venture is responsible for renewing two of the six steel weirs, each with a length of 27 metres and weighing 110 tons. The three associated lifting towers will also be renewed and the movement works modernised. The control building will be refurbished and a new workshop will be built. The existing fish ladder at the weir will be made suitable for passing eels.

The preparations, such as the construction of a temporary works bridge, are in progress. The construction works will be carried out during the low water period from April to the end of October 2019.
