BAM confirmed as University of Southampton's contractor for £35 million scheme

Hemel Hempstead, 5 April 2018 - BAM Construction is creating the Centre for Learning and Teaching for the University of Southampton. The new building which has commenced construction, will include a 250 seat lecture theatre, a range of seminar and teaching rooms, independent study space, a computer suite and a café. The seven storey building is set across two wings.

BAM has already been active on the site at Salisbury Road under an early works contract. This has prepared the site for development by reconfiguring car parking on Salisbury Road, diverting underground services and demolishing Building 58a.

The construction value is £35.6 million and BAM was chosen following a competitive two-stage design and build tender process. The Centre is scheduled to open early in 2019 and forms part of a long term major masterplan, which recently saw the conclusion of Chamberlain Hall of Residence and Boldrewood Innovation Campus.

BAM’s Construction Director, Anthony Nagle, said: ‘This scheme is logistically complex because it is surrounded by a public theatre, a bus interchange and examination centres among others.  It is part of the University’s wider masterplan for this quadrant of the campus. There are plenty of challenges for the construction team. But it is exactly the sort of scheme BAM has expertise and experience of, and that we can handle sensitively. Southampton is a strong base for us with a local supply chain and we have a good track record working with the University on some of its past schemes. I’m delighted that the University of Southampton has again appointed BAM as its partner, and we are well under way with our partnership.’

BAM’s many other previous buildings in Southampton include the University’s Life Sciences and EEE buildings; the Crown & County Courts, and healthcare schemes for Southampton General including Oncology, Cardiac and Operating Theatres. Further along the south coast, BAM has also delivered a range of different buildings around Portsmouth.

The architect for the scheme is Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios.
