British Antarctic Survey demo rig

How we are using the demo rig to deliver the project

At Rothera Wharf we have a specific challenge; to dismantle an existing wharf prior to constructing a newer larger wharf.  The structure must be dismantled in a very complex sequence using 90T, 30m long reach excavators digging down 10m at 20m outreach and using demolition shears underwater.  Due to the very remote location and short weather window for construction we aim to reduce learning curve, detect clashes and safety issues early by doing the work virtually before we mobilise to site.

We used the 3D design, temporary works and methodology visualisation models already produced and took it a stage further to gamify the content using game development software (Unity).  Our key goal is to familiarise the experienced drivers with the job, not to train them how to operate a long reach excavator. This means we also get the full benefit of their experience, helping us to optimise our methodology and manage the project risks.  The drivers we are employing often work internationally and in remote locations. Therefore accessibility to the demo rig was important. As a result we kept it simple so that the game can be operated on any laptop using a standard Xbox controller.
