BAM and Weber Beamix jointly operate Europe’s first industrial 3D concrete printing facility

Concrete printing facility

Gouda, 15 Janurary 2019 - After realising the world’s first 3D-printed concrete bridge, partners BAM Infra and Weber Beamix are now operating Europe’s first commercial, industrial-scale 3D concrete printing facility in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The bicyle bridge in Gemert, also in the Netherlands, marked the end of the experimental stage. Now the partners have scaled up their operation to the commercial and industrial level, printing prefab elements for the construction market.

The brand-new production method has proved to meet a need in the construction market. From the start, the 3D concrete printing facility in Eindhoven has had a well-filled order book, catering for 3D-centred housing developments such as Project Milestone in Eindhoven as well as many of BAM’s ongoing projects.

In addition, the partners in collaboration with the Province of North Holland have begun developing a series of four innovative bicycle bridges, which will stretch the new facility to maximum capacity.

Benefits

With this new method we have created the possibility of individual serialised production with an immense boost to freedom in design. We can print any constructive design with less concrete than in traditional methods, as the printing robot applies its material only where it’s needed. Less concrete means less CO2 emissions. And without the need for formwork, we’ve also got rid of waste.

What is more, the entire process is faster with a reduced error margin. At the design stage, all parties involved work from the same digital file. Any changes are calculated and applied digitally. All it takes to go from design to production, so to speak, is press ‘Ctr+P’. With all partners in the chain being able to input their expertise, the process is much smoother and risks are reduced to a minimum.

Partnership

Saint-Gobain Weber Beamix and BAM Infra are operating Europe’s first 3D concrete printing facility in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, where they work closely with their long-term knowledge partners Bekaert, Witteveen+Bos, Eindhoven University of Technology and Van Wijnen.
