BAM wins new design and build contract in Denmark

Bunnik, the Netherlands, 6 February 2019 – The municipality of Høje-Taastrup, twenty kilometers west of Copenhagen, has awarded BAM Danmark a design and build contract for a community school for the new urban expansion district, the suburb of Nærheden. The contract value is approximately €40 million.

The Nærheden school will accommodate approximately 1,500 pupils from 2021 onwards. The 15,500 m2 project comprises a primary school, a community home for education, a childcare centre, a sports hall and cultural facilities for local residents.

The prize-winning design of architects Christensen & Co is based on a completely new concept for the future elementary school as a learning house, where architecture and facilities stimulate students' immersion, ideas and creativity. The architectural design is characterised by a variety of open, semi-open and closed elements, which create a transparent structure. Stairs and walkways between the various smaller and larger atriums form a 'learning loop', which provides access to classrooms, exhibition spaces and workshops.

BAM Danmark was founded in 2014 by Royal BAM Group, and this project fits well in BAM Danmark’s project portfolio. The company currently employs 50 people. Previous projects include construction of an office building for the Department of Micro and Nanotechnology and a biotechnology research centre, both for the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), the European school in Copenhagen (design and build) and offices for the department of public works for the city of Helsingør. Projects in progress include a mixed use commercial building in Carlsberg Byen and an office building with storage and service facilities for HOFOR (Greater Copenhagen Utilities).
