Hemel Hempstead, 11 December 2020 - BAM Construct UK today announces it will ensure all its direct operations and all buildings it develops or directly controls, will achieve net zero carbon in operation by 2030.

In signing the World Green Building Council Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment, the company is also agreeing to being independently audited on progress, publically reporting on performance, and actively influence its clients and wider stakeholders to also achieve net zero.

BAM Construct UK, part of Royal BAM Group, has delivered some of the UKs most sustainable buildings, including net-zero education buildings such as the PassivHaus net zero Montgomery School in Exeter and the Co-operative Group’s HQ in Manchester, a building designed to be carbon negative. Across the group BAM is currently creating net zero hospitals and net-zero and energy neutral housing. For BAM, this WGBC Commitment embeds a net-zero commitment into our business strategy going forward.

BAM Construct UK Ltd Chief Executive, James Wimpenny, said: ‘As a leading company in our sector, we know we need to be more efficient with time and resources. As well as getting our own operations to net zero emissions, we can make an even bigger impact by helping clients remove carbon from their existing estates and future buildings, both in terms of how they operate and the materials used to build and maintain them. Signing up to the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment helps demonstrate both our own responsibility and the significant role we play in stimulating market change with our clients. Delivering net-zero is a significant design, technical and construction challenge and that challenge extends into how we manage buildings, and refresh them, over their lifetimes. Across our business, our teams are very motivated to make net zero a reality as quickly as possible, and this commitment will encourage us, and our clients, still further.’

BAM is one of very few, if any, signatories to the WGBC Commitment that has a holistic perspective: it is a developer, designer and contractor of buildings as well as managing their facilities.

BAM has been a partner to the UK Green Building council’s (UKGBC) Advancing Net Zero Carbon Buildings Program since its inception and this commitment builds on that work to transition the UK to a net zero carbon built environment. The standards now being championed by UKGBC and BAM, which outline what a net zero carbon building must be, ensure we have a common and transparent approach in our industry.
