BAM’S Medical School scheme in Lincoln wins regional sustainability award

Hemel Hempstead, 4 October 2021 - BAM’s University of Lincoln Medical School project has been declared Sustainable Development of the Year at Business Link Magazine’s Brick Awards. The awards recognise the companies behind the changing landscape of the East Midlands region and this award also acknowledges BAM’s commitment to sustainable development.

Ian Rainbow, who project managed the scheme and collected the award on behalf of BAM, said: ‘It was always the University’s intent to create the most sustainable building on their Brayford campus. The BAM team helped them make this vision a reality. We adopted a design for performance approach exploring how we could reduce energy usage to meet the university’s goal and carried out extensive energy modelling to control and monitor unregulated energy during the operations phase.’

The building features an Air Source Heat Pump with a hybrid VRF system, one of the first to be used in a university. It also utilises night cooling in certain spaces and thermal massing, which helps to maintain an ambient temperature, reducing the needs for additional heating and cooling. The scheme is aiming for a BREEAM Excellent rating and has achieved a DEC B and EPC A rating.

To make certain the building continues to perform as predicted, BAM will be working with Yonder Building Physics to monitor the energy performance of the building for the next three years. These valuable insights will enable the University of Lincoln to develop their sustainable building strategy into the future.
