Camberley, 22 September 2021 - A significant step towards the delivery of the Cross Tay Link Road has been made with the appointment of BAM Nuttall to deliver stage one (detailed design and advance work) for the project.

The Cross Tay Link Road is one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken by Perth & Kinross Council. The new road will unlock key development land and direct unnecessary traffic away from the city centre, creating a better experience for visitors and local drivers.

A new fly-through animation has been created to show what the road will look like and how it links to the existing road network.

Stage one of the project is expected to last up to one year; with stage two (construction) due to start afterwards.

BAM Nuttall’s submission included a number of important commitments which will benefit both the project and the local area - including an extensive package of community benefits, a pledge to pay all employees working on the project at least the Real Living Wage, and a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of the scheme.

Councillor Murray Lyle, Leader of Perth & Kinross Council, said: ‘The appointment of BAM Nuttall for stage one of the Cross Tay Link Road is a significant step forward in the development of this major infrastructure project for Perth and Kinross. BAM Nuttall has a proven track record of successful major infrastructure projects across the UK and beyond and I'm confident that the detailed design they create will allow us to meet our key goals for the Cross Tay Link Road enable new, planned and committed developments identified in the Local Development Plan; enable city centre improvements through the reduction in traffic volumes; and reduce journey times for local traffic.’

Martin Bellamy, Managing Director, BAM Nuttall said: ‘BAM Nuttall has a proud record of delivering major infrastructure improvement projects in Scotland and we’re absolutely delighted to be appointed to deliver this vital new crossing.  Our proposal combined an understanding of the environmental sensitivities of this location with innovative methods that will improve air quality, reduce carbon and boost biodiversity throughout the lifecycle of the scheme. We are also working collaboratively with our supply chain partners and engaging with local stakeholders and communities to ensure that we maximise opportunities for local development of skills and employment delivering positive social impact. We look forward to working with Perth & Kinross Council to deliver successful scheme outcomes, improving connections for communities along the route and enabling wider transportation improvements in the region.’

Notes to editors

  • BAM Nuttall was appointed as the stage one contractor after a detailed and thorough tender process carried out by the Perth Transport Futures project board.
  • The Cross Tay Link Road is phase two of the Perth Transport Futures Project. With phase one, the A9/A85 junction improvement and link road to Bertha Park, completed in 2019.
  • The Cross Tay Link Road will create a much needed new road linking the A9 over the River Tay to the A93 and A94 north of Scone.  It includes realignment of a section of the A9, provision of a new bridge over the River Tay and railway and provision of a new grade separated junction on the A9 north of Inveralmond Roundabout.  This phase will help to alleviate traffic congestion in the City Centre and Bridgend, creating capacity in the city’s road network that will enable a shift to greener modes of travel as part of phase 4 of Perth Transport Futures.  The CTLR will also facilitate sustainable economic development of Perth and the surrounding area as envisaged in the Council’s Local Development Plan. The route for the CTLR has been in development for over 10 years with the current route corridor being included in the Local Development Plan (LDP) since the consultation in advance of the final approved 2019 LDP.
