Ascon Completes M50
June 2005. The South Eastern Motorway (SEM) was officially opened by Martin Cullen TD, Minister for Transport, on Thursday the 30th June last.
The SEM is the last leg of the M50 and Ascon completed it ahead of schedule and within budget. Speaking at the opening, Brendan Barrett congratulated the Ascon team led by Bernard Murphy, John O’Sullivan and Fergus Burke. Brendan Barrett himself was praised by the NRA for his commitment to negotiating the Target Price Contract.
The South Eastern Motorway scheme forms part of the M50 motorway ring road around Dublin and comprises a dual two lane motorway with hard shoulders, on a route generally north-west/south-east from Ballinteer, through Sandyford / Carrickmines and on to Shankill. The scheme connects the Southern Cross Motorway at Ballinteer with the M11 Bray By pass at Shankill. The scheme consists of some 10km of new motorway, interfacing with M11 Shankill By pass over a 1.4km section between Stonebridge Road overbridge and the existing Wilford Interchange. The scheme forms the final link in the M50 Dublin C-Ring, with grade separated interchanges at Sandyford, Carrickmines, Laughanstown and Shankill.
