BAM Nuttall secures deck refurbishment contract for Tower Bridge

Camberley, February 2016 - BAM Nuttall has been awarded a design and build contract on an ECI basis by City of London Corporation to carry out an extensive deck refurbishment programme on Tower Bridge. Currently thorough site investigation work is underway to determine the exact condition of the bridge deck after which a detailed design programme will be worked up.

The programme of work will be the most intensive undertaken on the bridge since 1962 and is likely to involve the replacement of substrates beneath the running surface of the deck, carry out steel repairs to the bascules and waterproofing to the approaches. Once the design has been approved by London City Corporation it is anticipated that the construction work will commence in October 2016 with a view to completing the programme by the year end.

Mark Bailey, Principal Engineer, City of London Corporation, said: ‘We are delighted to have appointed BAM Nuttall to develop the site investigations and design for this important piece of work for one of London's most iconic landmarks. The City of London Corporation looks forward to working with them in the coming months, culminating in the works to re-deck the bascules, replace bridge expansion joints and resurface the fixed spans, as well as waterproof the approach viaduct arches.’
