BAM to build office block for Cornwall Council in Bodmin

Hemel Hempstead, 20 January 2014 - BAM Construction is to build a significant new office block for Cornwall Council in Bodmin. The contractor, which has a local office in Exeter, will create the three-storey building for council staff at Beacon Technology Park.

It is the first project BAM has won under the Cornwall Council framework, and together with private sector projects, takes the total value of the contractor’s work in the county above £30 million.

The modern office block will allow the council to support a number of its services to work more effectively through co-location with each other. The new offices will be more efficient to run and manage than the range of older buildings which they replace.

BAM is targeting a DEC rating of five, with sustainability features to include photovoltaic cells on the roof and natural ventilation.

The company will look to use local suppliers where possible as well as working with local schools and offering apprenticeships.

The project is due to start on site in February, with completion scheduled for April 2015.

Project manager Dave Hawkins said: ‘We are very pleased to have been chosen for this scheme and look forward to getting stuck in to creating a facility for the council to be proud of. This is our fourth project in Cornwall since we entered the market in 2011. We have built up a trusted supply chain and are very much enjoying working in the county. We hope this latest scheme will help us grow our presence in Cornwall and lead to further work.’

BAM has completed the £10 million Treliske innovation centre in Truro; the £8 million Truro residences project for Exeter University; and the £3 million St. Michael’s Catholic secondary free school in Camborne.

BAM is one of the UK’s biggest contractors; the leading construction firm in the Best Companies to Work For list; and was listed the highest of all the UK’s companies in the annual carbon reduction table.
