Building Magazine praises Pavilion

(Press release Leeds Metropolitan University:) Leeds, 15 February 2011 - The Carnegie Pavilion has been shortlisted for the Building Magazine Project of the Year award 2011.

The prestigious Building Awards, held this year on Thursday 7 April in Park Lane, London, recognise the industry's top performers and encourages sustained performance and further development throughout the sector

Sue Holmes, Director of Estates at our University, said: ‘After the challenge of designing a suitable landmark building, BAM were a fantastic partner to lead the construction and give Leeds Met the comfort of a well-managed project that was delivered on time and to budget, whilst needing to deliver a complex project on a constrained site, ensuring not only county cricket was playable during the construction but that an Ashes game was played. I had confidence in BAM to ensure the team ethos for the whole team rose to building challenges and was proactive in looking for benefits and solutions, meeting our high sustainability criteria and planning for a whole life costing approach, whilst meeting a professional standard for finishes and detail. Comments from a variety of users of this already well used building across a wide range of events have told us how many users feel they are in a unique and memorable location.’

The Pavilion was designed by Alsop Sparch Architects with BAM Construction leading the development. Built in partnership with Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Yorkshire Forward, the 4,000 sqm multi-purpose building is a distinctive new feature of the Headingley skyline. It operates as a state-of-the art cricket pavilion and media centre during the summer and a teaching facility during the academic year. This collaboration has meant that a significantly smaller footprint was used- saving at least 30% of space to create two separate buildings.

Officially opened in July 2010 by HRH the Duke of Gloucester, the Carnegie Pavilion was showcased to the local community at an event in December 2010 with the help of celebrity chef James Martin.
