Cross border for cantilever bridge

Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau. BAM’s German engineering company, in a consortium with Züblin is building a new bridge to the west of Rheinfelden to connect the German A861 and Swiss N3 motorways. This so-called ‘cantilever span’ bridge is 211 metres long by 24 metres wide.

The construction method uses moveable extension trucks to attach prefabricated bridge sections to a hammer head resting on a river pier. This process takes place on both sides of the pier. These extension elements connect to the abutments built out from the banks of the Rhine. The bridge – with a contract value of eight million euros – will be finished by the end of this year.
