Crossing St. Lucie Canal, Florida USA

Misener Marine [HBG Constructors] has been awarded a $26.5 million design/ build contract by the Florida Department of Transportation to build a 915 metre long bridge and roadway approaches. The project is located near Stuart, Florida, approximately 200 kilometres north of Miami, in the Florida Turnpike, a toll road.

The new bridge is comprised of 21 spans of which 3 are over the St. Lucie Canal. The superstructure consists of 107 bulb-T girders with a cast-in-place deck. Following completion of the bridge, both northbound and southbound traffic will be switched onto the new structure, which will allow the start of rehabilitation work to the old bridge. This work includes bearing and expansion joint replacements, joining the two decks in the center and a new barrier wall. Construction operations are scheduled to begin in November 2001 and the project will be completed mid 2004.
