Flatiron Construction awarded $28 million in new projects

Longmont, Colorado, 2 June 2004 – Colorado-based Flatiron Construction Corp. has successfully bid four new projects since April, totaling over $28 million worth of work.

Flatiron's Southern California subsidiary, FCI Constructors, has been awarded two of the projects - one to improve portions of Route 15 in San Diego, and another to construct a new roadway for the University of California-Irvine.

UC-Irvine chose FCI to design and construct the Southern Radial Road, which will provide access from the campus's main road to on-campus student, faculty and family housing. As a design-build project based on ‘best value scoring’, UC-Irvine's decision to award FCI the contract was not based on lowest bidder, but instead on an overall project value.

‘The University not only liked our alternatives for cost reduction, but also our plans for the drainage corridor’, said Dipak Parekh, senior project manager for FCI. FCI proposed a creative drainage alternative, which not only meets drainage requirements, but goes a step further to enhance the University's aesthetic value. The contract includes the new four-lane divided roadway, as well as associated storm drain facilities, signals, landscaping, irrigation, and additional project features.

In Colorado, Flatiron will improve portions of the E-470 toll road along Denver's eastern perimeter, and has also been chosen to construct a new 6-span precast concrete girder bridge over the Big Lynches River near Columbia, South Carolina.
