Flatiron Structures Company awarded Salt Lake City Light Rail Transit design-build contract

Santa Ana, California – Flatiron Structures Company [a subsidiary of HBG Constructors Inc. and managing partner of SLC Rail Constructors] has been awarded a design-build contract for the 2.5 mile Light Rail Transit System from downtown Salt Lake City to the University of Utah.

This $71.8 million project for Utah Transit Authority is an extension of the existing North/South Light Rail System and will carry passengers to the University of Utah an Rice Eccles Stadium.

The project scope includes trackwork, four passenger stations, electric power supply and distribution [including traction power substations and overhead catenary system], signalization, integrated traffic control and communications.

It requires extensive utility relocation, maintenance of high-density traffic and roadway reconstruction. The schedule goal is to complete the project in time for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

The light rail project will ease traffic congestion in this corridor, reportedly the second heaviest traveled corridor in the state, that includes the University of Utah, major hospitals and several large businesses. University Light Rail plans to run four car trains on the line, which would allow a riding capacity of 600 people.

SLC Rail Constructors is a joint venture of Flatiron Structures Company, Stacy and Witbeck and W.W. Clyde. CH2M Hill is serving as the lead design firm with STV and Hatch Mott MacDonald providing specialized rail and systems design expertise.
