Flatiron wins AGC Constructor Award for Northern California's Carquinez Suspension Bridge

Longmont, CO, 4 May 2004 - The New Carquinez Suspension (Alfred Zampa Memorial) Bridge, a landmark project for Northern California, won its eighth award - the Associated General Contractors of California (AGC) / Gallagher Construction Services award for Meeting the Challenge of the Difficult Job, Heavy Engineering category. Constructed by Colorado-based Flatiron Construction Corp. through operating companies FCI, Interbeton, and Flatiron Constructors, the bridge is North America's first suspension bridge to be built in over 30 years.

According to the AGC, "The Constructor Award Program allows members to share achievements   with others - not in a boastful way, but rather in the sprit of sharing work well done. The award winners give us a yearly example of striving for the best in 'Building California'."

The joint venture FCI/Cleveland Bridge not only met challenges inherent to projects of this size, but also those specific to this bridge, which boasts the United States' sixth longest span and first Orthotropic Box Girder (OBG) deck ever used on a suspension bridge. The project team lifted 24 deck sections, directly from the carrier vessels, into place by means of hydraulic strand jacks, and performed other technically challenging tasks while simultaneously restoring eleven acres of wetlands, and achieving a safety record with no major accidents or injuries, a feat recognized by the AGC in 2001 and 2003 with two Safety Excellence on a High Hazard Job awards.

FCI North President/Project Manager Curt Weltz accepted the Constructor Award on behalf of FCI/Cleveland Bridge during a black-tie banquet at the upscale San Francisco Fairmont Hotel on 24 April 2004. Mr. Weltz thanked and gave credit to all who had participated in the project, recognizing the families who showed patience and support during the four years of long hours dedicated to building this bridge.

The three sister companies involved with this joint venture, FCI Constructors, Inc., Flatiron Constructors, Inc., and Interbeton, Inc., are subsidiaries of Flatiron Construction Corp., a Royal BAM Group company. Flatiron specializes in transportation and heavy civil projects both on a national scale and in local districts. Its experience encompasses major highways, traditional and specialty bridges, toll roads, tunnels and light rail transit projects throughout the United States. Flatiron is consistently ranked among the top bridge and highway builders in North America.
