HBG wins joint venture contract for Antwerp railway tunnel
Rijswijk, the Netherlands – CEI Construct nv and Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG – both group companies of the European construction group HBG – have been awarded the contract for a bored railway tunnel in Antwerp, in joint venture with French and Belgian contractors.
The tunnel is part of the high-speed line between Brussels and Amsterdam. The contract value of this project for client Belgian Railways [NMBS] amounts to €70 million, of which thirty per cent for HBG. Construction will start in May 2001. It is expected that the tunnel will be completed by the end of 2004.
The project involves the construction of two parallel tunnels with a total length of 2.5 kilometres and a diameter of approximately 7.5 metres. The tunnels are situated between Queen Astrid square and Dam square in the centre of Antwerp and built in the hydroschild-tunnelling method, which has been developed by Wayss & Freytag for tunnelling in soft grounds.
Partners in the joint venture with CEI Construct and Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau are CFE/MBG – Dumez/GTM, Jan de Nul, Van Laere and Smet Tunneling.
