'Hunebed' centre calls for more than just stacking stones

In and around the beautiful northern Netherlands village of Borger, right next to one of the largest ‘hunebeds’, which are megalithic tombs, BAM Utiliteitsbouw is building the new National Hunebeds Information Centre.

The typical Saxon farmhouses and rolling landscape of the Hondsrug area, as well as the hunebeds themselves, were important sources of inspiration for the Amsterdam architect Hannie van Eyck. The dark red curved roof of Western Red Cedar ‘slates’ is characteristic of the building. Just as the landscape varies in height, so the height of the roof and facade brickwork changes. The information centre offers an entrance foyer, a restaurant and a large exhibition space. The observation deck is on a mezzanine floor. Extra let will be let into the roof via round cylinders.
