Japanese sections for American bridge

The assembly of the steel bridge deck sections on the New Carquinez Bridge in California takes the project into a new phase. The new fixed link over 1,000 metres long spanning the Carquinez Strait is being built by a consortium including HBG Constructors.

The bridge, the largest of its type built in the United States in the last 35 years, hangs from two 124-metre high concrete pylons. After spinning the suspension cables was successfully completed last autumn, the preparations were begun for the bridge deck construction. This consists of 24 sections with a maximum length of 51 metres, fabricated in Japan. The bridge should open to traffic at the end of this year, after which the 1927 steel truss bridge alongside will be demolished. The contract value is 188 million euros, 122 million of which goes to Royal BAM Group’s American operating company.
