M1 Irish Environmental Motorway

M1 Irish Environmental Motorway

The M1 Northern Motorway from Dublin Airport to the Balbriggan Bypass, was officially opened recently by The Primeminister, Mr Bertie Ahern, T.D. Ascon, in joint venture with Nuttall, was awarded the contract for the first section of the works. This section comprises approximately 6.5 kilometers of 2x2 lane motorway from the Airport Roundabout to Lissenhall Interchange.

The works involved the construction of grade separated junctions at Cloghran and Lissenhall; eight overbridges and two underbridges and a major estuary crossing at Broadmeadow. Construction commenced in August 2000 and the project was completed several months ahead of schedule in June 2003.

This new motorway will remove 3,000 heavy goods vehicles daily from the N1. It has also resulted in 60 per cent less traffic around Dublin Airport as all north or southbound traffic not heading for the airport is routed straight underneath the interchange along the motorway. Ascon is the Irish operating civil engineering company and Nuttall is the UK operating civil engineering company of Royal BAM Group.
