Nuttall awarded £67.99 million Bhairab Bridge contract, Bangladesh

Edmund Nuttall Ltd has been awarded a contract by the Roads and Highways Department of the Ministry of Communications, the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, to design and construct a major bridge over the River Meghna, near Bhairab. The £67.99 million project, which will start shortly, has a contract duration of 33 months.

The main bridge, of in-situ, pre-stressed, balanced cantilever, concrete segmental construction, consists of eight spans of 110 metres. The four-lane 1.16 kilometre river crossing includes concrete approach viaducts on both banks. Major river training works, toll plazas, minor structures and ancillary buildings are included in the design and construct contract.

Nuttall is employing GIBB Ltd and Robert Benaim & Associates from the United Kingdom, together with Development Design Consultants Ltd of Dhaka, Bangladesh, as their design team.

UK funding for the project of £35.56 million is being provided, equally split between a grant from the Department for International Development [DFID] and a loan from Standard Chartered Bank supported by the Export Credits Guarantee Department [ECGD]. The Employer’s Representative for the project is the Halcrow Group, UK who maintain an office in Dhaka.

Edmund Nuttall Ltd is an operating company of the European construction group HBG, Hollandsche Beton Groep nv. Other group companies of HBG have also been active in the development of Bangladesh’s infrastructure with projects including the construction of the Karnaphuli Bridge, the Jamuna Bridge and harbour works in Chittagong.
