Pylons rising in California

The foundation work for the two pylons of the New Carquinez Bridge presently under construction in California has now been completed. The foot of each pylon stands on 12 tubular steel piles, three metres in diameter. The 50-metre pile casings have been drilled out to a depth of 95 metres and anchored into the bedrock.

The new suspension bridge, which has an entire span of 1,055 metres, is being built north-east of San Francisco by a joint venture including HBG Constructors. The contract value is US$164 million, of which HBG's share is worth US$106 million. The project recently received the important the American Safety Award, having recorded 200,000 man-hours of work without an accident involving time off.
