Salt Lake City's New Medical Center Light Rail Wins Three Awards

Longmont, Colorado, 25 March 2004 - SLC Rail Constructors, a joint venture of HBG Flatiron, Stacy and Witbeck, and Geneva Rock, has been awarded three awards for excellence demonstrated on the construction of Salt Lake City's new Medical Center Light Rail Transit.

The first award, an Associated General Contractors of America Aon Build America Merit Award, was presented at AGC's 85th Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida, on 12 March 2004. This design-build project was also awarded Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award, and AGC Utah's Highway Project of the Year.

‘We want to express our gratitude to SLC Rail Constructors on the successful completion of the Medical Center LRT project. SLC Rail Constructors is a team that delivered a safe and quality project, on budget and ahead of schedule. We congratulate you on this achievement’, remarked John Inglish, general manager for the Utah Transit Authority.

As joint venture partner, HBG Flatiron built 1.5 miles of paved double track, four station platforms, overhead contact system, retaining walls, full depth roadway reconstruction, train signals, and numerous utilities.

Not only was the project a success in terms of profit, but also for its contribution to the local community. SLC Rail Constructors maintained a high level of sensitivity towards the University and Hospital communities by returning use of part of the construction area to Salt Lake City's University of Utah during commencement ceremonies, as well as maintaining two open lanes of traffic at all times- twice the capacity required by the owner- to accommodate hospital traffic.
