Taylor Woodrow/BAM Nuttall joint venture awarded £250 million contract to upgrade Tottenham Court Road tube station

Bunnik, The Netherlands, 17 December 2009 - A 50/50 joint venture between BAM Nuttall Ltd and Taylor Woodrow (part of VINCI Construction UK) has been awarded a contract in the region of £250 million by Transport for London (TfL) to upgrade Tottenham Court Road tube station.

The station will be enlarged to provide twice the capacity than at present, including a ticket hall almost six times the size of the existing one. New station entrances, modernisation of the existing station passageways and platforms and a new concourse with links to Tottenham Court Road station will be provided to reduce congestion. Additional escalators and five lifts will provide step free access throughout the station as well as conventional stair access. New staff accommodation will be located beneath Charing Cross Road. A new Crossrail Eastern ticket hall structure is also included in the scope of the contract.

Externally, improved facilities will be provided for pedestrians, cyclists, bus passengers and other road users including a new piazza on St Giles Road outside Centre Point as part of the contract.

Construction is due to begin in early 2010. The programme will take 80 months with a view to completion by September 2016.
