Tom Moore, the winner of the Baroness Platt of Writtle IENG Award 2015.

(News release Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE):) London, 15 July 2015 - Tom Moore IEng MICE has received the Baroness Platt of Writtle Award 2015, presented by the Worshipful Company of Engineers, a prestigious annual national award recognising the achievements of a newly registered Incorporated Engineer (IEng). Tom was presented with a prize of £1000, a medal and certificate at the Annual Awards Dinner of the Worshipful Company of Engineers which took place on 14th July.

Nominated by the Institution of Civil Engineers, Tom was judged against 9 other candidates from five Professional Engineering Institutions. Many outstanding engineers were nominated from the 1,339 individuals who achieved IEng in 2014.

Tom Moore has worked for BAM Nuttall since 2001 on a wide range of construction projects, rising from a junior technical role to senior site agent responsible for construction works. After successful leadership of his section of works on the Crossrail Western Tunnels project he is now responsible for the construction of the East Ticket Hall at Farringdon Station upgrade for Crossrail. He developed a change to the construction sequence including the planning and implementation of the largest single structural concrete pour on the Crossrail project to date. He has also developed initiatives on health and safety and led negotiations on commercial issues.

After achieving EngTech, he used his experience to encourage and support others and is currently an ambassador within his company for the EngTechNow campaign. He progressed to IEng in 2014. Tom has also worked to develop, facilitate and actively encourage training including apprenticeships to enable the workforce to progress from ‘the tools’ up to foreman & supervisory level, providing opportunities that were not previously available.

The judges were impressed by his level of responsibility in terms of leadership, innovation, commercial management, management of health & safety issues, and the development of staff, which are considered to be exceptional and far above that normally seen for a newly Incorporated or Chartered Engineer.

Tom said: ‘I am delighted to have received this award. My career with BAM Nuttall has been both exciting and challenging, and it is an honour to have it recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers, Engineering Council and Worshipful Company of Engineers. I would like to thank my family and colleagues for all their support throughout my career.’

Jon Prichard, CEO of the Engineering Council, says: ‘On behalf of the Engineering Council I would like to congratulate Tom Moore, who is clearly an outstanding IEng registrant. We were delighted to hear from the judges that the quality of all the nominated candidates was extremely high. Incorporated Engineers make an essential contribution to all sectors of the engineering profession, and once again we would like to thank the Worshipful Company of Engineers for recognising newly registered individuals through this award.’

Peter Blair-Fish, Award Coordinator of the Worshipful Company of Engineers, says: ‘This award is for Incorporated Engineers of all disciplines. This year saw an exciting spread of nominees working on railways, mechanical systems, marine craft, and aircraft in both civilian and military environments. Their nomination papers demonstrated a very high standard of engineering and professionalism.’

Suzanne Moroney, ICE Director for London and the South East, says: ‘I wholeheartedly congratulate Tom on receiving this prestigious award. His work on Crossrail shows how invaluable good leadership skills are to the industry and the benefits they have for the successful delivery of any project, no matter how large. Without civil engineers like Tom, we would simply not be able to construct some of the essential pieces of infrastructure we require in the capital.’

Nominations for the Baroness Platt of Writtle Award 2016 will be invited early in the New Year. Professional Engineering Institutions can nominate up to five candidates who have achieved IEng status during 2015. Nominees should, in the view of the Institution, have displayed outstanding commitment to the engineering profession, have excellent communications skills and have demonstrated management qualities.
