Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau secures order for North/South Line in Cologne

Bunnik, 21 November 2003 – The German tunnelling specialist Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau – a Royal BAM Group operating company – is a partner in the joint venture that has been awarded the contract to build a section of Cologne’s North/South Metro Line. The contract is worth €385 million, with a share in excess of €128 million for W&F Ingenieurbau. The client is Kölner Verkerhrs-Betriebe AG.

Phase 2 of the North/South Line extends over a distance of 3,260 metres beneath the densely built-up centre of Cologne. The project involves the construction of seven metro stations and twin, single-track metro tunnels almost 2,500 metres long. Two tunnelling machines (7.3 metres in diameter) will be used to drive the tunnels. To minimise the disturbance, four out of the seven metro stations will be built entirely underground. The other underground stations will be constructed in an open excavation.

The North/South Line will provide a direct link between the main Cologne railway station and the city centre. By 2010 an estimated 100,000 passengers a day will be using the line.
