WMG Academy for Young Engineers Solihull: BAM secures its first contract under EFA regional framework

Hemel Hempstead, 2 November 2015 - BAM Construction in the Midlands is commencing work on its first contract under the new EFA Regional Framework at WMG Academy, Solihull.

BAM was successful at Local Competition Tender with Option A that has been used on behalf of WMG Academy for Young Engineers Solihull pursuant to the Education Funding Agency Regional Framework. The value is around £11 million.

The Academy is sited in Fordbridge, North Solihull and will serve the needs of 640 students aged 14 to 19. It will focus on a broad base of engineering with science, with specialist attention being given to the areas that are applicable to local employers in the automotive, aerospace and high value manufacturing sectors. Allied to this will be a focus on ICT and digital technology as enablers to engineering, with supporting themes of enterprise and sustainability.

The scheme achieved planning approval in June and BAM has started enabling works on site. The scheme aims to complete in summer 2016.

David Ellis, Construction Director for BAM said: ‘One of BAM's strengths is working considerately around a client and its neighbours and we recognise the need for us to do that here. Now only will we bring modern first class construction techniques to this new building, but we'll look to involve local companies and the community whenever possible so that it creates local benefits and opportunities.’

WMG Academy has a wide range of commercial partners including Jaguar Land Rover, Rolls Royce CDS, Arup and WMG at The University of Warwick.

In addition to business partners, WMG are also working alongside a number of employer groups who have helped steer the plans for the new Academy, including  the EEF (the manufacturers' association) and WMMC (West Midlands Manufacturing Consortium).

The architects are Maber, while BAM Design will handle structural and civil design and M&E design is by Cundall.
