HBG Construction Ltd, which today has a portfolio of work representing over £148 million in the education sector [including £92 million in university work], has been awarded a design and build contract to provide a large new teaching facility for New College Nottingham [ncn].

HBG Construction has started work on the design and construction of a new office development in Forbury Square, close to the centre of Reading. The £22 million scheme involves two main office buildings, a large basement car park and a new public square being constructed on the site of an old abbey and bounded by existing offices.

Flatiron Structures [a subsidiary of HBG Constructors] has acquired a joint venture design and build contract for a cable-stayed bridge over Cooper River between Charleston and Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. When completed in 2005, the bridge will be the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America. The contract value amounts to US$531 million, of which 40% is for HBG.

Rohcon Ltd, one of Ireland’s largest building contractors has been named as the winning main contractor by the Office of Public Works for the total refurbishment of the Government Buildings at The Glen, Waterford.

HBG Construction has been awarded a £50.5m design and construction contract by property developer Helical Bar and the Prudential Assurance Company for an office development by the former racing track at Brooklands, near Weybridge in Surrey. Construction began in september with completion scheduled for spring 2003.

Ritchies, currently undertaking the £14.2 million contract to decommission the East Side Water Catchments in Gibraltar for Defence Estates, has added a new mobile drill rig to an already impressive fleet of seven units operating on the famous landmark. In total some 9,000 ground nails will be drilled, installed and grouted as part of the two-year slope stabilisation contract.

The project to strengthen the Medway Bridge has been shortlisted as a potential BCIA [British Industry Construction Award] winner. The project is up against some stiff competition from around the UK construction industry and we will find out later this year whether HBG has been successful.

Ritchies, the specialist geotechnical division of Edmund Nuttall Ltd, has been awarded a new framework agreement by Railtrack in Scotland for slope stabilisation works throughout the Scottish Zone.

Work continues apace on the construction of a complex power station development at Baglan, near Port Talbot in South Wales. Nuttall was awarded the civils package worth £20 million on General Electric's 500-megawatt power station; the first of its type to be built anywhere in the world.

Rijswijk, the Netherlands – Interbeton – group company of HBG, Hollandsche Beton Groep nv – has been awarded the contract for the internal upgrade of the new Sheikh Rashid Terminal at Dubai International Airport. Client is the Department of Civil Aviation Dubai. The contract value is € 10 million.

Building under cover should save time, result in better quality and, not least, improve working conditions. A trial involving a gigantic tent on one of HBG Woningbouw’s projects near The Hague is being conducted to find out whether the claimed advantages can be achieved in practice.
